Blue Plaque in Memory of John Atyeo

A new blue plaque is being unveiled in a Wiltshire village later, at the former home of Bristol City legend John Atyeo. He was born in Dilton Marsh near Westbury, and made more than 600 appearances for City, scoring a record 351 goals. Graham Noble at John Atyeo Blue Plaque Unveiled Day.

As many of you will know John was a football player with Bristol City and still holds the record for number of goals scored in a season. He was selected to play for the England Football team on some six occasions, scoring in five of them; It would not doubt have been many more if he had agreed to sign up as a full time player, but John always wanted to stay local.

You may also be aware of his teaching career at Kingdown School Warminster ,where he headed the Mathematics Department and also Matravers School in Westbury. In speaking with both members of staff and students it was made clear to me how he was respected by all.

Tom Hopegood, author of “The Hero Next Door”, has kindly agreed to give a summary of John’s life and career with Bristol City at the Dilton Memorial Hall, at 7.30 pm. and this will also be an opportunity for any other individuals who may like to relate any personal memories of John.
