A Tall Black Man

May 17, 2023

An illustrated talk by Andrew Campbell about events that followed the Battle of Worcester in 1651 when Charles II made a dramatic escape from Cromwell’s forces.

A fugitive with a £1000 price on his head, he was described as a “Malicious and Dangerous Traytor” and “A Tall Black Man above two yards high” on wanted posters.

With the help of Royalist supporters, Charles reached France and later returned to Britain to claim back the Crown after the years of the Republic.
