Wiltshire Women in the First World War

Dilton Marsh Local History Society are looking forward to welcoming Ruth Butler, Heritage Education Officer for “Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre” who will be delivering her talk on “Wiltshire Women and the First World War”.

We will be introduced to just what the first global war meant for the women of Wiltshire – the munitionettes and nurses, the women who sewed, knitted and collected food parcels for those serving overseas and for prisoners of war.

Using archives and images from the Wiltshire and Swindon History centre, Ruth Butler will also delve deeper into the pioneering work of individuals like Wilton’s Edith Oliver who founded the Wiltshire Women’s Land Army and Florence Mildred White who joined Salisbury’s City Police force to become the first sworn woman police constable in the county.

The talk is arranged for Friday 29th April at the Dilton Memorial Hall at 7.30 pm.

Admission £4.00 non-members, £2.00 members.
